WELCOME TO WESSEX

Here in Wessex we‘ve a long and rich history when it comes to grape growing and winemaking. Due to the cool climate and rich diverse soils of the region, many vineyards planted 10-15 years ago are now paying dividends. Hampshire is home to Hambledon Wineries, England’s oldest commercial vineyard planted in the 1950’s and our region is a diverse mix of large International producers, boutique wineries and small hidden gems.

English wine is an exciting new force in the wine world and the region produces world class wines which regularly win awards both here in the UK and earning well deserved recognition across the globe. Although still wines are made, it is the traditional method sparkling wines that consistently capture attention and represent the majority of wine production in the region. The main grape varieties grown are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier (for methode traditionnelle sparkling wine), Bacchus, Ortega, Seyval Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris.

Sales of English wines have grown considerably over the last few years including online, supermarkets, high street and independent retailers and direct to consumers from the producers themselves. Helping to drive this growth is wine tourism, where there is now a thriving scene in the region including new openings of cellar doors and tasting rooms, wine events and an increasing number of food, drink and hospitality venues. A vineyard tour and wine tasting is no longer an experience reserved for trips overseas!

Our friendly collective has been supporting and educating members and many of those pioneer vineyards such as Hambledon Wineries, Exton Park and Hattingley Valley are flourishing and now stand among our 85+ members alongside the next generation of bold, inspiring, innovative grape growers and winemakers.

Wines from the Wessex region stand out for their diversity and individuality, from aromatic whites, delicate rosés, smooth reds to classic English Sparkling Wines.
